Nellie Stevens Holly gets its name from the woman who grew the original hybrid, Nellie Robinson Stevens. It was somewhat of an accident that she crossed Chinese holly (Ilex cornuta) and English holly (Ilex aquifolium) to form a new holly that has become universally popular for its unique characteristics.
This holly stays dark green year-round and makes an excellent hedging or screening tree. It naturally grows in a pyramidal shape, but can be pruned into a box hedge form as well. Makes a great topiary, too!
Nellie Stevens holly is fast growing at 3 feet per year and can tolerate a little neglect. In winter, these trees produce inedible but iconic red berries that are perfect decorations for the holidays.
Nellie Stevens Holly plants are grown from propagated cuttings and are not grafted.
